Italy is the global headquarters for ZEISS Sunlens, housing both RD and production operations and serving as the innovation hub for new product and process development. We are seeking an experienced Automation Engineer to join our Sunlens team in Italy. In this global role, you will work with suppliers; designing specifications, testing, implementing, and managing advanced automation systems within our industrial manufacturing environment. Your work will contribute directly to simplifying and optimizing production processes, improving efficiency, enhancing product quality, and increasing overall productivity. Your Role The role of Automation Engineer will involve: Lead the design and operational deployment of automation systems in production. Serve as the main point of contact for engineering teams on all industrial automation-related projects and issues. Collaborate closely with production and maintenance teams to launch new automated processes or improve existing ones. Provide technical support for troubleshooting automation-related production problems. Evaluate and engage with technology suppliers; scout new technologies and champion innovative automation solutions. Partner with manufacturing leaders to define mid- and long-term automation strategies across the production chain. Extend accountability and support to the ZEISS Sunlens manufacturing plant in China, ensuring global alignment. Your Experience As Automation Engineer you will have: Experience Autonomy: 3+ years in highly automated manufacturing (preferably mechanical or plastic components), with the ability to independently manage automation projects and coordinate internal teams and suppliers. Technical Leadership: Skilled in drafting technical specifications and driving automation/digitalization initiatives to streamline production processes and enhance control systems. Organizational Skills: Strong planning, resource management, teamwork, and a results-oriented approach in industrial environments. Programming Software: Proficient in C, C++, Java, Python (preferably LabWindows/CVI), with experience in software analysis, development, and PC/PLC systems for measurement and automation. Control Systems Protocols: Solid understanding of control system theory, system modelling, and communication protocols like CAN, CANOpen, EtherCAT, and UDP. Mechanical Embedded Knowledge: Background in mechanical engineering and hands-on experience with sensors, actuators, motors, PLCs, embedded systems, and compliance with safety/quality standards. You will ideally have: Knowledge of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning technologies. Expertise in the creation of Human-Machine Interfaces (HMI). Expertise in Model Based Design.
