Eikon is a leading Surrey based charity that has been working throughout the county for over two decades, providing preventative, early intervention and long-term support to some of the county’s most vulnerable young people and their families. By establishing inspirational relationships between a young person and their adult professional, our vision is to develop happy, thriving and resilient young adults who contribute positively to society.

Eikon has developed strong partnerships with local authorities and other statutory agencies, including the local NHS Trust responsible for mental health services, has an income stream from statutory and voluntary sources of c. £2m p.a., employs some 60 personnel and has access to over 100 volunteers throughout its activities.

Board of Trustees

The Eikon Board is responsible for the strategic direction, governance, core policies, fiscal oversight, legal compliance and general performance of the Charity to meet its Charitable Purposes. The Board structure consists of c.11 Trustees, including the key posts of Chair and Finance Director/Trustee, with further Trustees appointed to ensure the Board has the skills necessary to perform its duties efficiently and effectively.

The Board holds quarterly evening meetings, together with the Chief Executive Officer and other Senior Leadership Team (SLT) members, as appropriate. A one-day annual retreat of Trustees with the SLT is held to reflect on the current Eikon 5-Year Strategy, Business Plan and Budget. Trustees are offered an initial induction and a typical time commitment equates to c.2 hours per month.

Responsibilities

Eikon is currently seeking a Trustee with a general legal background (who need not necessarily live in Surrey), and who’s role would include to:
Support the organisation to identify and manage areas of legal risk.
Provide commercially pragmatic legal advice, balancing the applicable legal framework against the operations and strategic aims of the organisation.
Provide support and/or advice to other Board of Trustee members and employees in relevant legal areas.
Provide guidance on contracts and service agreements - where necessary engaging with external legal support to do so.
The Legal Trustee does not need to be a specialist in a specific field but should be willing to familiarise themselves with the legal framework surrounding the charity’s operations and strategy as required.

Qualifications

Skills and Experience

Skills and experience of a successful candidate would include some of the following:
Acting as a Trustee – Knowledge of the role of a Trustee / Director and some experience working with or as part of a Board of Trustees or Business Board.
Strategy - Exposure to and/or involvement in the development and implementation of strategies (business, commercial and/or charity).
Charity Governance - Exposure to and involvement with charity and/or business governance processes and procedures.
Financial – General awareness of business, commercial and/or charity management accounts and reports.
Safeguarding - Exposure to and/or awareness of the importance of safeguarding for young people and for employees/volunteers who work with young people.
Legal Matters - Exposure to and/or working knowledge of specific aspects of Employment law, or Charity law, and/or Contracting in the public or statutory sector.
